Leading Operators – Fitness in Germany

edelhelfer report as of 31 December 2016

At the end of 2016, the ten largest providers by members accounted for around 3.2 million exercisers, around one third of all studio members in Germany. This means that the total membership of the top 10 operators grew last year by around 150,000 or
about 5 %.

There were only a few shifts within the ranking. Discount provider FitX was able to move up one place to seventh. With 14 new openings, which corresponds to a facility growth of 40 %, the company is one of the strongest growing providers. However, due to the high proportion of new facilities, membership growth is likely to have been much lower. As in the previous year, only discount franchise provider EASYFITNESS showed similarly strong growth, increasing its membership by 25 % last year and thus climbing to fifth place ahead of the Swiss provider Migros. Migros also owns the franchise fitness chain INJOY following the complete takeover of the fitness industry-focused consultancy INLINE in 2016, thus taking its place in the ranking. In addition to the INJOY facilities, the group's facility portfolio thus consists of six clubs operated by Migros itself under the ELEMENTS brand, which have been able to increase their membership to around 16,000.
